Presidential common candidate General Fonseka said, he did not come to politics removing his uniform with the aim of wearing it again. The people are giving me a mandate to make me a leader, not to resume the duties of an Army Commander, he added.
The general stated that when addressing a meeting in Colombo convened by National Lawyers’ Association where he was a special guest. At the gathering over 1500 Lawyers, when answering a question raised by a Lawyer, he gave this answer.
At this official meeting of the Association, Friday night (27), Senior Lawyer Upul Jayasooriya and Gunaratne Wanninayake were elected as President and Secretary respectively. A special feature at this meeting was the presence of Parliamentary MPs, and PC Wijedasa Rajapkse MP and former COPE President who obtained membership of the Assocaition.
It was the consensus that General’s first speech after leaving his uniform and speaking to the civil population which has been downcast by the war was inspirational. The General arrived for the meeting at about 8.15 p.m.
The General stated that even after winning the war, violence and lawlessness are raging in the country. As many political parties approached him and complained about the corruption, instability, media freedom erosion, State property devastation, abolition of Executive Presidency and other reasons, he decided to take over political leadership with a view to saving the country.
If the people give me a mandate to serve them, I shall, in the way I carried out my duties to the letter when I was in the Army, I shall endeavor to do my utmost to live up to their expectations, General observed.
He is happy and looking forward to working with the people in the service towards the country, he asserted. H e is the common candidate of the present Opposition for the Presidential elections, the General and former Chief of Defense staff, Sarath Fonseka announced.

Four including Ministers and an MP who did proud for SL in the sporting field are to quit the Govt. ranks and are ready to support Gneeral Sarath Fonseka for the upcoming elections.
It is learnt that the President who was having discussions with several persons at the Temple Trees yesterday night (2) , had given out the names of the persons with much disappointment. It is also reported that those in high places of the Govt. have been instructed to closely monitor their activities . movements and their phone call conversations.
Sources also say that Kurunegala Municipal Council Deputy Mayor Asoka Abeysinghe is to join the UNP in the next few days, and that he has met UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday night (2).
Rumors are doing the rounds that Kurunegala District UNP M.P. is to join the Govt. In that event Abeysinghe has been promised immediate appointment as the Organizer for that District ,the UNP M P now represents.
