SLFP (M) leader Mangala Samaraweera addressing a meeting yesterday (26) at the party Headquarters said , what General De Gaulle did to France to save his country ,Gen. Sarath Fonseka can do better. He told this after disclosing that his party has agreed to support Gen. Sarath Fonseka’s candidature for the forthcoming Presidential elections 2010.
The fate of the President Rajapakse family rule is now written on the wall. The Govt. and the President who are more aware of this than anybody else are so desperate that they are running amok using violent and illegal means to harass Sarath Fonseka and those supporting him. The President and his Govt. having nothing to criticize the General who has proved beyond doubt his Honesty and integrity is alleging that if he comes to power , there will be a dictatorship . Doesn’t the President know that there is already a de facto dictatorship in the country ?. Media which exposes the Govt. malpractices and corruption are either murdered or intimidated and attacked. Opposition voices are gagged . Constitutional rights of the people are withdrawn without the mandatory constitutional Councils being appointed . The rule of law and the legal processes are improvised while the Democratic Institutions themselves are destroyed at the very foundation., Mangala pointed out.
